Firearms and Ammunition Information

At Leeuwfontein Safaris, we welcome hunters who prefer to use their own firearms during the safari. South Africa has a well-established process for temporarily importing hunting rifles, and with a little preparation, it’s a straightforward and stress-free experience.

Here is a complete guide to help you understand the legal requirements and prepare accordingly:

Importing Firearms into South Africa

To legally bring your rifle into the country, you will need to obtain a Temporary Import Permit issued by the South African Police Service (SAPS). This permit is known as the SAPS 520 form.

You can choose one of two methods:

  • On Arrival: Complete and submit the SAPS 520 form at the Firearm Office in the Johannesburg (O.R. Tambo) or Cape Town International Airport.
  • Pre-arranged with a Service Provider: We recommend using a third-party agent to help pre-clear your permit for added convenience, especially for first-time travelers.

Required Documentation

To apply for the Temporary Import Permit, please ensure you bring the following documents with you:

  1. Notarized copy of your passport
  2. Return airline tickets or full travel itinerary
  3. U.S. Customs Form 4457 (for U.S. citizens – this certifies ownership of your firearm before departure)
  4. Invitation Letter from Leeuwfontein Safaris
(We will supply this upon confirmation of your booking)

Make two copies of all documents – one for submission and one set to keep with you during travel.

Firearm & Ammunition Regulations

To ensure compliance with South African firearm laws, please take note of the following restrictions:

Firearms:

  • Limit: You may import up to two hunting rifles per hunter.
  • Caliber Rule: The two rifles may not be of the same caliber.
  • Prohibited Firearms: Fully automatic, semi-automatic rifles, handguns, and military-grade weapons are not permitted for import.

Ammunition:

  • Limit: You may bring up to 200 rounds per caliber.
  • Storage: Ammunition must be transported in a separate, secure, lockable hard case, distinct from your rifle case.
  • Baggage Declaration: Be sure to declare both firearm and ammunition during your check-in with your airline.

Helpful Tips for a Smooth Process

  • Arrive Early: Budget extra time for firearm clearance at the airport upon arrival.
  • Firearm Case: Use a quality, lockable hard-sided rifle case. Label it clearly with your name and destination.
  • Transit Airports: Avoid traveling through countries with strict firearm laws (such as the UK) unless you have confirmed their transit regulations in advance.
  • Communication: Let us know your firearm details ahead of time so we can assist and prepare the necessary invitation documents.
